The intention of the fonotaip index is to point out the irregularity of the pronunciation of written english and question whether this may be contributing to the immense variety of accents.

Each page of the book can be unfolded to reveal the difference in pronunciation of 2 similarly spelled words. The blue pages show the fonotaip vowels and the vowel variation in different cities in the UK.
